when you are thinking about the science. does the availability of guns in peoples homes lead to an an increase in the likelihood that they are going to die? you have to ask what are the guns that are killing these people? where did it come from? for women and children and older people, they come from the home. for young men, they come from the street. in looking at the totality of the literature that has been developed over the past 30 years, individual studies and studies that looked at areas and compare them to one another, what we find is that where there are more guns, there is more death. there is more homicide, suicide , and there are more firearm accidents. these studies have taken pains to try to control for differences between homes with and without guns. states with and -- with more and fewer guns. by taking these factors into account, they tried to render apples to apples type comparisons. what i am going to show you is a collection of states that have high levels of gun ownership. it is meant to illustrate the ma
